If there’s one must-have item for the upcoming fall and winter months, it’s a leather piece. The leather movement is going strong and from what we saw during the Fall 2011 presentations at New York Fashion Week, it has no intention of slowing down. From 3.1 Phillip Lim to Alexander Wang, Derek Lam, Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren, leather made a huge splash. It came in pants, shift dresses, skirts, pastel colors, rich dark colors and boy was it fabulous.

The beautiful thing about leather is that it never actually goes out of style, it just keeps being reinvented. The leather of today is definitely not your grandmother’s leather, it’s soft, flexible and versatile. You can dress it up or dress it down, pair it with your favorite jeans or a fitted feminine dress to add a little edge.

Dina is the designer behind the label One Luv. Born and raised in Sydney, Dina was known for her creative edge and her thirst for travel. She grew up travelling the world and continued to visit places that fascinated her during her studies (Dina studied Commerce, majoring in Finance and Law before completing her Masters). On her journey she realized that there was an underlying feeling that connected all the people of the world, no matter what their language, race or culture. That feeling was love, and that realization was the inspiration for the name and label: One Luv in 2004.

1. How did you get started?

Very modestly! I started out making jewelry to earn extra cash while I was studying. I didn’t put a lot of money into it, just $100 to get started with some materials and equipment and away I went. I was not that internet savvy so I actually pounded the pavement going from store to store selling my jewelry to the shop assistants through out Sydney. All the girls new me after a while, they would always ask when I would be making new styles and would complain about how none of the stores had really unique jewelry. That’s when I realized my little hobby could be a lot more…I decided to approach boutique owners to see if they would stock my jewelry. I was so nervous the first time I entered a store, I figured it would take a while before I found one that take me on. To my joy and somewhat disbelief, I picked up the first store I approached and as they say…the rest is history.

2. Describe your line

One Luv is definitely a label for the fashion fierce. It doesn’t shy away from being different and avoids following passing trends. The pieces are unique yet versatile, quirky yet timeless and most of all, they’re really fun!

3. Where do you get your inspiration from?

From LIFE really. I think inspiration and creativity is drawn from one’s experience. So the more rich a life you lead, the more places you travel to and things you experience, the more you have to draw from for inspiration. Each one of my collections reflects a particular time in my life, whether it be a place, a person or experience I had. A lot of the pieces are actually named after places and people that have inspired me.

4. Memorable fashion moment?

It would have to be when I was about 10 years old and I went to my best friend’s Birthday Party dressed as a punk rocker. We went to different schools so I hadn’t met her friends before. We had talked beforehand and decided that “Fancy Dress starting with the letter P” would be an awesome theme for the party. I was so excited to rock out my Punk attire I didn’t bother checking the actual invitation to see if the party was still fancy dress! So I wore far too much make up (even for a grown woman let alone a child), sprayed my hair upright, rocked out a black leather jacket, fishnet stockings… the works….only to show up as the only girl NOT in a pretty floral party dress. The worst part was that the other girls just assumed I was in my usual attire and shunned me for the entire day…ah the fashion faux pas we endure in the name of fancy dress!

The revival of the 70s and 80s continues this summer with all things that glitter and sparkle. Let’s get to know Wemi, learn a little about her and look forward to her coming posts on Sense of Fashion’s blog.

1. How did you get started?

Like most Designers and fashion aficionados, my love for fashion and style started when I was a child. My initial inspiration was always my mother. As I grew, fashion grew with me. The turning point of deciding that I wanted to take this to the next level came while I was living in France. I loved the simplicity and elegance of French fashion which always came with a twist and I never had a dull moment people watching. I decided that I would create an avenue to promote polished and easily put-together looks for women of all ages.

2. Can you describe your line?

The idea behind Rue de Chic is accessible luxury. It’s where simplicity meets elegance. Each piece is meticulously crafted and intricately designed to enhance the confidence in you. For me, it’s not about trends but investment pieces that will stand the test of time and style.

3. Where do you get your inspiration from?

Mainly from travel, architecture, music and books. A lot of my ideas come while I’m reading or sleeping too actually…

4. Memorable fashion moment?

The first Couture dress that I ever put on was Emmanuel Ungaro for a show I was walking in and I fell in love.

5. Anything else?

A lot of people are intimidated by fashion. There’s a lot of focus on how things should be done but honestly, the idea is to have fun with it. There are a lot of outlets for fashion these days…The personal style blogs are endless and everyone wants to look like someone. People forget that you should always be comfortable in what you wear. Fashion to me is like falling in love. I feel my stomach flutter and my heart drop each time I come across an amazing piece. Simply put, I enjoy it and it makes me feel good. As Coco Chanel said, “Fashion has two purposes: comfort and love. Beauty comes when fashion succeeds.”

2011 CFDA FASHION AWARDS

Monday nights CFDA Awards saw fashion’s elite come out to celebrate new stars as well as brilliant veterans of the industry.

Talk about fabulous; sporting a turquoise bob and a corset get-up by Mugler, a label now helmed by her friend Nicola Formichetti, Lady Gaga took the stage to accept her award as the year’s top style icon.

We hear that the ever-composed Gaga was teary eyed as she recalled getting the text message from Anna Wintour telling her that she was picked for the prize. Thinking the message was from a friend named Anna she replied with a bleep-worthy response. The text back from the Vogue editor-in-chief said, “How lovely.”

The evening’s host, the ever dapper silver fox Anderson Cooper, clad in a Ralph Lauren tux, delighted the audience with a montage of his early days as a preteen model.

Naomi Watts, dressed in a metallic T-shirt-style gown by Francisco Costa for Calvin Klein, presented the top womenswear honor to Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez of Proenza Schouler.

Karolina Kurkova, in a striking hooded jumpsuit made of green sequins by Diane von Furstenberg, read the names of the winners in the Swarovski emerging-talent categories: Eddie Borgo for accessories, Robert Geller for menswear and Prabal Gurung for womenswear.

Designer Marc Jacobs, who is 48, was there for his “half-lifetime achievement award,” according to presenter Sofia Coppola who was clad in a simple white dress from the designer’s resort collection

Kanye West, who handed the international design prize to Phoebe Philo of Celine, said he’s been known to go into a Celine store and try on the clothes — womenswear, no less!
