In the past few months we’ve been getting a lot of questions from you on different aspects of the fashion business, and always with a sense of urgency. So instead of answering you one by one, we decided to let the entire fashion creators community benefit from the questions and answers, and publish a selection here each week. You ask, the SOF team of experts answers. Enjoy.

Q: I’m shooting my first real look book, and I need it to look gorgeous, but I don’t have a huge budget. Is there any way I could get inexpensive models from agencies?

A: Nothing in fashion is free, even when you are getting things for cheaper than full price, there’s always a reason. For models there could be a few reasons to take on a job other than the pay; it could be creating beautiful images they can use for their portfolio, or positioning themselves in a way that is slightly different than what they’ve done in the past – a very commercial model might want an edgier photo shoot and vice-versa.

So, in order to get a model for a discounted cost or for pure trade, i.e. in exchange for product, you should:

Contact the agency in a time they’re not busy i.e. fashion weeks

Ask them who are the “fresh faces” that can use some great portfolio shoots

Play up the artistic qualities of your shoot, having a great photographer or stylist helps

Downplay any commercial uses of the shoot – never mention advertising

Note that even if an agency allows you to book a model for trade, you still might have to pay the agency itself a fee, so make sure to discuss this on the phone.

Q: I’m designing a non-profit scarf line made in Afghanistan, and wanted to ask what are the standard sizes for fall scarves?

A: There are no standard sizes. So what we recommend you do, is shop a few of the stores you would want to sell to, look at the sizes of the scarves they carry, and then you either match the shapes and sizes OR see what’s missing. Both are good strategies!

Q: I have a really amazing idea for an accessory, and I made a prototype, but I’m afraid to show it to anyone, especially stores, because I’m afraid I’ll get knocked off. How can I protect myself?

A: Well, first of all there are not a lot of ways for you to protect your designs. There is no way to trademark or patent a design, and the overall sense in the industry is that as long as you change three things, you are safe from lawsuit, i.e. color, and two small design details are enough to protect the copier from any kind of lawsuit.

Important note: you can and should trademark / copyright your logo and name.

That being said, any kind of success you have as a designer will bring on copy cats. Your true test as a creative person, a designer and a business owner, would be not to come up with one great design, but to come up with multiple ones, season after season, always staying one step ahead of your competition.

So go ahead, show your design to stores, buyers, friends and anyone else whose opinion you’d want, knowing that if the response is positive, you can use it as a building block for a long career in design.

Good luck!

OR – You can just leave your question as a comment to this post

Looking forward to reading your questions

This week, we get to know Louis, a born and raised Philadelphian, who came to live, work, play and make it big in Manhattan. Louis shares his fresh view and original thoughts on fashion, along with some tips from a good NYC café to what to avoid as a new designer.

Sense of Fashion: When did you launch your label?
Louis Mairone: My website featuring my first Fall collection was published June 1st.

SOF: What’s the story behind the label’s name?
LM: It is my first and middle names reversed. It just sounded more fluid to me. Plus, I always liked the idea of having an alias but didn’t want it to be too far off from my own.

SOF: What was the biggest obstacle you had to overcome?
LM: Making the transition from working in corporate design, where there is an unlimited budget to create new samples and buy all the necessary items to convey the vision.

SOF: How did you overcome that?
LM: I understood that being on a budget doesn’t necessarily create limits for me. It has just pushed me to find new options and experiment more with what I have available.

SOF: What strikes you as interesting in current fashion and what’s always relevant?
LM: Currently I think the play on volume and silhouette has really been driving my eye. I think it creates a sort of undefined un-contrived elegance. As for always relevant… you should always be effortless.

SOF: What trend has been over used?
LM: While I have been influenced by all of this incredibly emotional modern post apocalyptic idealism, at the end of the day I think the trend has been over done. There is only so much black to be worn. Although I love the black and the modern Gothic sensibility, I have more recently been missing the fun in fashion; the outright glamor and beauty.

SOF: Name your top three fashion loves
LM: I try not to pay too much attention to fashion periodicals and trend forecasters etc. It can kind of skew what we can imagine in a raw sensibility, it tends to taint an original vision. Not to say that everything in fashion isn’t repeated, but when it is fresh to you in that moment it is new.
That being said, I do find a lot of inspiration from skimming the racks at Atelier NY. They have a great aesthetic and a great buy season after season. I love Ann Demeulemeester this season, and I know this is incredibly predictable but I have always taken so much from the late McQueen’s work.

SOF: Which rock star would you most want to dress in Dominic Louis?
LM: I’ve always loved Mick Jagger. I think he emulates the image of a true rock star; I would have also loved to dress the Beatles. Now it would be more along the lines of Lenny Kravitz and MGMT. The effortless sensibility found in men like these, who could wear and carry anything, is something that makes my mind race. The possibilities are endless yet make sense and are functional.

SOF: Name your fave fahion blog, photographer and stylist
LM: Blog - Dirty Flaws, Nikki Moose seems to always have something exciting and interesting to write about, look at, look further into. Photographer – Zachery Michael, who also shot my first lookbook. Stylist – Tre Knight, also responsible for working on my first lookbook.

SOF: In the city where you dream and work, NYC, what’s your fave café?
LM: I just recently moved above a wonderful little cafe in the East Village called Café Orlin. It is a blend of French and American cuisines and the food is always perfect. They are always open, affordable and packed with an interesting crowd of people.

SOF: What’s something you wish someone had taught you in the first year of your business?
LM: Not to rush the inevitable. Chasing opportunities as opposed to working towards a common goal of success can not only be disheartening but also overwhelming. Your work will suffer and in the end the most important thing is the product. If you build the castle they will come all in due time.

SOF: What’s the best advice you can give a designer who’s just starting out?
LM: There is the idea in fashion that to be anything you have to be the best. What is the best? You don’t have to be the “best” or the most successful. You just have to be happy with your work and who you are inside. If you can center yourself to this point you will be successful, because you will be happy following your own path and no one else’s. The journey is just as important as the destination.

SOF: Where can shoppers find you online?
LM: The fall collection can be seen on website. There is no e-commerce, but a retail contact where special orders can be placed. The collection will be carried by OAK NYC come September 1st.

Sense of Fashion: What work are you most proud of?
Delving Lugo: I really enjoyed a recent editorial I did for Naag.com called Boy like Girl like Boy (see photos)

SOF: What is your favorite current trend in fashion?
DL: Menswear for women. I like a girl who can make pleated trousers, a button down shirt, and heels all look sexy

SOF: Which current trend are you tired of?
DL: One-shoulder dresses

SOF: Who would you most want to style?
DL: Right now Dakota Fanning is on top of my list. She wears clothing that suit her age and personality very well. She’s stylish, she knows it, and has no need to flaunt it.

SOF: Which fashion house surprised you?
DL: I really like what Missoni has been doing with their ad campaigns recently. The one from Fall ’09 by Ryan McGinley with the models hanging on the back of a pickup truck were really refreshing to see.

SOF: Best advice for a stylist just starting out
DL: I believe it’s important to try to assist for as many different stylists as possible. It will benefit you greatly to see how other stylists work and to grab new styling tips from them. Also, your knowledge of designers will grow, since a lot of stylists have different favorites.

Delvin’s top shopping on Sense of Fashion

1. Galih Jumpsuit in Black by RadenRoro “Because you could wear this to work and after” http://www.senseofashion.com/RADENRORO/items/32458/Galih-Jumpsuit-in-Black

2. Ivory Puff sleeve wrap dress by Brooke Catherine’s. “This is a perfect Summer dress; a bit retro without being too costumy. Wrap dresses usually fit most body types well.” http://www.senseofashion.com/BrookeCatherine/items/14838/Ivory-Puff-Sleeve-Wrap-Dress

3. Birds of a Feather vintage purse by Closet Full of Goodies: “I’m a big fan of Vintage clothing and accessories, this one is a treasure.” http://www.senseofashion.com/ClosetFullOfGoodies/items/28273/Birds-Of-A-Feather-Flock-Together-Vintage-60s?-Clear-Handbag

4. Little woman saddle shoes by Belle Jar Vintage. “I like how masculine yet feminine these shoes are. Wear them with trousers or a dress.”

http://www.senseofashion.com/BellejarVINTAGE/items/35059/Little-Woman-Saddle-Shoes-

Delvin’s most inspiring Sense of Fashion member

DL: Right now, I’m very inspired by Barbro Andersen. This is one of my fave photos of her http://www.senseofashion.com/BarbroAndersen/items/31058/And-remember-no-matter-where-you-go-there-you-are
I find her style intriguing and effortless just like her surroundings.

23 year old London designer Sunny Williams, shares some thoughts and experience about personal style, quality and freedom.

I design for a sunny character
I was named sunny for being a bright personality; from a family tree or dark hair I popped up with light hair. I try to project this ethos of the sunny character into every garment I design, and every garment is for the sunny character.

I started off designing for myself
Because I’m very slim and nothing ever fits me, I was forced into editing my garments. I started to skinny fit my trousers when I was about 16. After a couple of years of taking in garments I decided making my own was easier. I used college lunch breaks to make my own T-shirts and waistcoats. The influence for my look at the time was pirate, with guitar on his back… from Jimi Hendrix to early cowboy films, Sid and Nancy on the rooftops, singing songs to the girls with jagged edges.

For me fashion is freedom
I found I could express myself through image at an early age, and wanting to rebel against normality I found fashion to be freedom from restraints. I was a young punk when I went through college to study fine art, contextual studies, fashion and clothing, still life drawing and fashion styling and promotion.

I believe you should show the world you true colors
Great style is always style with substance. I fear for those that are spoon fed trends like the typical Topshop girl who walks our streets. We are all walking signs, a display of our own personality, and if you are just a shop’s display, your true color is jaded and that’s a shame.

School gave me technique
I passed college with a distinction and went on to university, down at the coast at Portsmouth. This was where I collected my ideas and started to project my vision. It’s also where I studied real hard to learn technique. The single most important thing for me was believing that I had a great vision and exciting concepts, but I had not captured the essence or technique to finish a garment perfectly. University taught me that. After graduation I did work experience on Savile row.

A perfectly made garment is bliss
My first successful garment was the one that was perfectly made. A tailored boyfriend blazer, I was so pleased when every line matched up and was sewn perfectly. To finally get to the point where your construction meets your eye and imagination means endless possibilities. I will go on to perfect my little boys dreams into fashionable art you can live in, that’s what I said at the time.

A designer needs to put the dreams next to reality
I graduated last year, set up my business in my last term at University, and my final collection went on sale instantly after graduate fashion show. This past year I’ve been selling well, learning my business, thinking about niche, customer, price – reality. Many designers are dreamers, but to make it work you have to put the dream aside next to reality, ask yourself what can sell. Intelligence is vital, or else the best garment in the world can sit in a shop and collect dust.

How I use the online
I sell online, even provide one of’s tailored to young desire, I advertise online and my website will be an online boutique, with a blog to inspire people how to wear the garments.

My Agenda: Kill the high street girl
All us new designers must kill the high street girl; fashion has become throw away, cheaply manufactured garments that lack quality, detail and beauty. As a new designer you must help show the buyers that they should splash out on something that will last 50 years, not 50 minutes. I’m thinking garments that you give to your children, and they give to their children. I’m talking about items that last forever and are simply beautiful. Obviously couture fashion is all about this, but the high street needs to produce more quality.

When dealing with a brand with a track record, they can rely on previous sales information in order to make buying decisions such as how many tops, bottoms, dresses to buy, and they order based on this prior history.

A meeting between an established designer and a store, while based on style, is also driven by data. In extreme cases, successful fashion houses may even suggest what to buy from their collection. Emerging designers, however, do not have this luxury.

To learn how stores buy from emerging designers, Sense of Fashion interviewed Shira Sue Carmi, founder of Launch Collective (www.launchcollective.com) and lecturer at Parsons School of Design.

Stores need to fall in love – help them
As an emerging designer, the first thing you need to do is to make the store fall in love with your line. It’s an aesthetic issue first and foremost: they have to fall in love with the product and they need to feel passionate about it and be convinced that their customers will be equally passionate about it. Only then will they look at prices, which need to be within the range of their department, and ideally on the lower end of their range so there’s an incentive to buy. Then, and only then, will they choose.

Stores are looking for reliable designers – build a good reputation
This is very common so don’t be discouraged: Major stores will often look at a brand for the first season without actually buying into the collection. They need to know that if they commit to introducing the brand to their shoppers, the brand will be there for the long run.

The fashion industry is very small, and buyers all know one another and talk about which brands are selling well and shipping on time, and which are not. They look to see that a brand is consistent, because their job is not just finding the latest styles, but rather finding brands they can add to their assortment on a long term basis.

Department stores are different from boutiques – Know who you’re talking to
There are two types of stores: boutiques and department stores. Department stores carry many categories and have many employees in their buying team. Boutique buyers on the other hand are often also the owners, so they have much more control when making financial decisions, they can decide to take chances. When you’re talking to them, you’re talking to the ultimate decision maker.

When you’re talking to a department store buyer, you need to know that they have different buyers for different categories. Make sure you are talking to the right person! Also know that these buyers have very limited control, they have a budget for the entire season and at least 80% of it will go to brands they’ve already bought from in the past, so there’s only a small budget left for new brands.

Stores only buy at specific times in the year – use that window of opportunity
The big sales seasons are spring and fall. The buyers buy for spring from mid-August to late-October, and for fall from mid-January until late-March. Be sure to secure meetings with them in those periods, otherwise even if they like your line they won’t be able to buy it.

This, of course, is also a tricky game: you want to reach them early, while they still have the budget available to buy, but not so early that they’re not yet ready to make a decision. Ideally what you want to do is meet with them fairly early, but then keep following up – don’t miss the window, or you miss the entire season.

Most stores don’t make huge orders – know what to expect
In your first season, department stores are most likely not to buy at all, and boutiques might buy small. On your second season, if they like you they will probably place a small order. For an American boutique, this can range between $1,500 to $3,000 per season at wholesale, and in future seasons if your product sells well it goes up from there. With department stores it varies widely: a store like Barneys may buy as much as $2M – $4M from an established brand, but small department store are more likely to place an order in the range of $5,000.

A purchase order from a store is a binding contract – read it carefully
Stores don’t usually place an order the first time they see you. They take notes, marking the styles that they like, then they go back to their offices and crunch the numbers. Only then do they place the order, by fax or email.

You need to send a confirmation, review and approve the order. Once you approve, the order becomes a binding contract. A SIGNED PURCHASE ORDER (PO) is a binding contract. You need to make sure you can meet all of the conditions in the order – time frame, cancellation date, shipping terms, packaging and labeling requirements, etc. Not meeting these requirements can result in having your shipment returned and not getting paid!

Stores over-buy – don’t give them a reason to cancel
A lot of stores, especially small boutiques, often over-buy, so there’s always the chance they will try to cancel the order later on if their overall sales don’t live up to their original plan. As a designer, you should avoid giving then excuses to cancel, especially the most common one – not shipping on time.

Stores love to be first – offer exclusivity
Stores often pride themselves on being the first to offer their shoppers new and exciting designers and styles, to differentiate themselves from the many other stores that their customers can shop. Some buyers will even demand exclusivity in exchange for placing an order. If you can afford to give exclusivity, even if only for a portion of your line, it’s a great bargaining tool to try to get a better order and better floor placement.

Not sure who your customer is? How to discover you customer demographic

When building a fashion label, whether you plan to become a huge retailer or stay a boutique label, you have to be able to answer one extremely important question: who is my customer. Sense of Fashion interviewed Shira Sue Carmi, founder of Launch Collective www.launchcollective.com and lecturer at Parsons School of Design, on this matter.

“This question,” says Carmi, “is the most important question a designer can ask themselves, because these days, there’s no room in the market for just another collection or just making clothes, to have any chance of becoming relevant you need to find your customer and speak to her in a consistent and meaningful way.”

Sense of Fashion: What is the most important thing to know when starting to define your customer?

Shira Sue Carmi: The first important thing is making the distinction between your ideal target customer and your actual buyer. Your target customer doesn’t have to be the one who actually buys the product in the store.

SOF: Could you give us an example of how this works?

SSC: A good example from the mass market would be Abercrombie & Fitch. The customer in A&F’s mind is a college kid from an Ivy League university, who plays football and has a very preppy lifestyle. The actual buyers are high school students, and maybe some older guys who like how the A&F models look.

This distinction is very important; there is the brand’s ideal that the design team uses to create the products, and there are the actual buyers. It’s more important to articulate the ideal customer, and make them inspirational and aspirational enough so that other people would want to be that person. The actual buyers don’t have to live that lifestyle, but they are people who want to buy into that lifestyle.

Another example is designer Alexander Wang. Wang created this ideal buyer who’s a “model off duty” – she’s a little bit trashy, a bit of a bad girl, nonchalant, effortless. The girls who actually buy Wang are mostly young professionals in the city, 20-35 year old girls who like to feel a bit like that – careless, trashy and cool, even though they might actually be lawyers or accountants. When Wang designs, he isn’t thinking of the accountants, but of the models.

SOF: Doesn’t the designer have to create things that normal people can wear?

SSC: There’s a tricky balance you have to achieve; the designer in a big brand has to design towards the inspirational customer, the merchant in a big brand has to make sure that the line includes pieces that normal people can buy. In small brands – the designer has to do both.

SOF: So, how does a designer reach that concept, of the inspirational customer?

SSC: As a designer, you need to make sure that when you’re asked “Who’s your customer?” you don’t give a lame answer like “women from 18-45”. You need to get specific, it should be a certain person, and the more specific you’ll get, the better and more consistent your product will be. Just remember: create a powerful brand message, which is cool and inspirational enough to other people, who will want to buy it to feel like they are part of that lifestyle.

SOF: Could you give us an insider’s tip on how this can be achieved?

SSC: Sure, take A&F – they have fit models who are actually an embodiment of their ideal customer – Ivy League boys. They fit their clothes on them – and see whether it works for them. They fit their designs on their ideal customer, which is something every emerging brand can try.

While the designs of Stockholm designer, Camilla Wellton, are obviously corresponding with the Japanese art of Origami and inspired by architecture, they also possess very organic-like shapes, making the wearer look like an elegant flower.

Talking to the “brown French Swede” (her words: “my mom is from the French Caribbean and my dad is Swedish”) this makes perfect sense: our short interview reveals a designer who relies on love as opposed to fear, and a person who is all for healthy natural food and slow fashion. It seems that her cohesive voice as a designer stems from a holistic perception of life and art.

Camilla Wellton officially launched her label last fall (2009), after graduating in the summer, though it had existed throughout the years of her studies. It is named after herself, “it just felt most natural. What I do comes from within me, it’s so personal, I couldn’t call it anything else.”

Sense of Fashion: What was the biggest obstacle you had to overcome, and how did you do it?

Camilla Wellton: Realizing that the only thing that held me back was my fear of “failing”. That was a big relief, because I didn’t understand it in such simple terms till then. From that moment on I decided I would do what I feared the most: challenge the fear and allow love to be the master of my mind, the fire in my heart.

SOF: What is your favorite current trend in fashion?

CW: I do my best to avoid reading fashion magazines and trend reports. I like the trend of thought that empowers people to dress independently of trends, so they are able to express who they are in the language of fashion. I also like the emergence of slow fashion that explodes seasonal boundaries.

SOF: What trend should never have happened?

CW: 80’s XXL shoulder pads hehe

SOF: Which are your favorite cities?

CW: St. Petersburg is Beautiful, as is Stockholm. Cuenca, in Ecuador, is Gorgeous!!!

SOF: What is your fave café in the entire world?

CW: My fave place is Gilda´s, at Nytorget in Stockholm. It is the sweetest place to have a latte in the morning. It’s hard for me to recommend a dish there, because being almost vegan (I do drink milk) for the past 17 years, I’ve simply adopted my own way of eating simply; fruits, nuts, bread, milk in my tea, an occasional latte and raw veggies. Very rarely do I eat out. It Might seem weird, but it makes my stomach happy, and when my stomach’s happy, it’s easier for my mind to be happy.

SOF: Name your top three favorites – photographer, designer and blog.

CW: My fave photographer for the moment is Emma Jönsson-Dysell. I’ve worked with her on three collections, and she simply amazes me.

Fave Designer: I admire Cristobal Balenciaga.

Fave blog: http://hyperboleandahalf.blogspot.com

SOF: Who’s your dream actress for your clothes?

CW: I would feel elated if Marion Cotillard, who plays Mal in Inception, would wear my creations. She is stunning! As is Chloé Sevigny.

SOF: What’s the best advice you can give a designer who’s just starting out?
CW: Trust your heart and the hearts of others. Accept criticism only if it allows you to let go of that which limits your vision. Don’t force yourself to follow set rules that “should” work for everyone. Discover the rules that come from within your dream and vision, and apply them on reality. Make your dream real by seeding it in reality and feeding it with love, patience and faith.

Once you’ve registered on Sense of Fashion, you have your own profile as well as a storefront that you can share with everyone.

Adding items for sale on Sense Of Fashion is very similar to adding photos to your profile. But there are few more steps involved.

Step One: Click on the Sell link under the Sense Of Fashion logo.
Go to our upload page, where you browse and upload photos of items you’d like to sell. You can also add detail shots in addition to a main photo for each of your items.

Step Two: Add Your PayPal Account To Your Profile
The first time you go to upload items for sale, you’ll be asked to enter your Paypal account. If you don’t have a Paypal account, you can create a new one, and the process takes less than seven minutes. For professional sellers, we advise opening a PayPal Merchant account, which enables you to accept credit card payments from customers that don’t have PayPal accounts.

Step Three: Once you’ve uploaded photos, add product details
These details include the price of the item you’re selling, a full description of it, available sizes, shipping costs and destinations, etc.

You must catalog, or classify, the items you’re selling.

After you’ve added this information, you’ll be asked to choose the type of photography you’re adding. It tells the buyer what kind of item you’re selling.

Item Categories: From the drop down menu, select the your category.

Save your product details and you’re done. Your items will appear with a “price” label and an “add to cart” button.

Other Tips

1. Once you’ve uploaded your primary photo, you can add additional photos, also known as detail shots of your item. By adding multiple shots, you give customers they ability to look at items multiple ways and this increases their likelihood of purchase.

2. Product descriptions, titles and tags are IMPORTANT, please see “How To Become A Successful Seller” for detailed information on how to create proper copy.

There are two ways to upload for bloggers, photographers, designers and retailer to add photos on Sense Of Fashion.

The first way is to directly upload them directly from your computer or you can important them from Flickr. We’ve created a step-by-step guide of how to upload your sale items.

Uploading Photos From Your Desktop

Step 1: Go to the Sense of Fashion homepage, click on “Sell.”

Step 2: From the “Upload” page, find the photos you want to use on your computer, and upload them to Sense of Fashion.

Make sure that your photos are 500K or less and that the files end in either .jpg, .gif, .jpeg or png. The better the web resolution is, the faster your photos will appear.

Step 3: This is the hardest part about uploading photos: Waiting! Once you’ve uploaded your images, follow the steps to create a sale listing for each product.

Uploading Photos From Flickr

If you use Flickr, you can import photos from your Flickr page to your Sense of Fashion page complete with your titles, tags and descriptions!

Step 1: Go to the Sense of Fashion “Sell” page and click that you’d like to import from Flickr. Step 2: You’ll be redirected to your Flickr login page. Sign yourself in. Step 3: Authorize Sense of Fashion to link to your Flickr account. Step 4: Choose the photos you want on your Sense of Fashion page and import them. Make sure that the tags, titles and descriptions on your Flickr photos are all in top form, as this information is transferred to Sense of Fashion, too.

Tags, titles and descriptions are highly important for people to find your design or creative work, so double check to see if everything is just how you want it.
