It is not often you see designs which make you feel elevated, in love. Shesho designs, with their complete seemingly effortlessness and the sheer beauty and true grace of them, were dazzling to me, and made me feel that way. Here is an interview with shesho designer, the 23 year old Krista Kelly.
Q: When did you start designing clothes?
A: Unofficially I started creating fashion in about sixth grade, when I began turning my Barbie dolls into punk rock vixens, and making them clothes to go along. I was also buying vintage clothing and redesigning them with the help of my crafty mum.
I got serious about making clothes about ten months ago, after returning from a three month stint in Buenos Aires, Argentina. I found Buenos Aires extremely inspiring, from the language to the fashion to the graffiti, it stirred the creative force in me and I began brainstorming, made myself an inspiration book using cutouts from fashion magazines (new and vintage) that gave me ideas.I’m originally from Bellingham, Washington. It’s a great little college/mountain town up north, right next to the Canadian border. I moved to Portland in September and I LOVE it. There I began prepping to begin the business.
Q: What’s your favorite part of the creative process?
A: There are so many things I love about it, that it’s hard to pinpoint just one… I think I get the biggest rush from the completion of a creative idea; the moment a garment is complete, assuming I’m happy with the execution, gives me a very good feeling. I also love shopping for materials, I’m happy when someone is excited over my stuff, and seeing someone wearing something I made – it’s all great.
Q: Why is the label called shesho?
A: “Shesho Facil” is the name of a graffiti artist in Buenos Aires, who has tags all over the city. Finding the tags became a fun game for me and I would look for them all everywhere. It has a nice ring to it, and of course it also has a bit of sense as in SHE, and not he, and SHO – as in show.
