The virtual meeting with Elizaveta Yankelovich has convinced us beyond any doubt that mothers aren’t what they used to be, and that one can in fact be a mother (of a “magical 3.5 year old son Izaac”) and an uber-cool
trendsetter at the same time. So is the 31 year old Elizaveta (originally from Moscow, currently at Toronto) who’s the creator of this dream pink bubble gum necklace and many others, all of which are a stylist’s dream come true.
What triggered your creations?
Just obsessing over a plethora of fashion magazines - my mother had an addiction to them. I dabbled in designing, but did not have the patience to make more than one garment after the original. The patience and skill involved is beyond my short attention span.
Then I got into Fashion Styling, did that for a few years until I ran out of money and needed a dependable job. The accessories I make currently stemmed from the Fashion Styling, I always strived to collaborate with the photographer and create a photo shoot that was original and one of a kind.
What’s your favorite ready-made object?
I like ready made object that are ordinary objects transformed into art. I love it all… I think the idea of turning recycled, repurposed found objects into marvelous pieces of art, that provoke thought, joy and emotion, is an amazing ecologically sound process. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Found_art
Which other indie designers impress you?
I actually just got my hands on a gorgeous raw silk black dress by Jason Meyers, and it’s HOT. He has fun with his pieces, I like that.
In my line of art I have many faves… I Love Psarokokalo (see here on Sense of Fashion http://www.senseofashion.com/blog/2008/05/02/sea-change-psarokokalos-one-of-necklace/) Neawear, Untamed Menagerie, Voz Clothing and Art… that’s just a few…. (all can be found on Etsy).
And who’s your favorite haut couture designer?
I just saw an FT episode on Rodarte. They are extremely inspiring, the creation of a beautiful flowing gorgeous collection, it all looks like woven magic. Each piece is like an artistic ice cream cone dripping in chocolate. They are unique, I love that they have no academic design training. They seem extremely down to earth, and all about experimentation and experiencing the journey that they are on.
Where do you like to shop the most?
I’m into buying Local and Vintage.
What’s your fave magazine?
I don’t have just one… I Love Zinc, Nylon, Wallpaper and Bust… Love All the International Vogues, y’know the nice fat ones that I can’t afford, but drool over at the book store.
What have you been listening to lately?
Lately it’s a lot of Steve Marley, Ella Fitzgerald and Van Morrison.
Which 3 items in your closet did you wear the most this past year?
Jeans, Moccasins, my Huge Wool Duck Sweater.
What childhood garment made your heart brake when you grew out of it?
I don’t really remember, but I have this photo of me in Rome standing on a dresser in a pink and white crochet pantsuit/jumper. It was pretty obnoxiously awesome.
Which 3 accessory items of yours did you wear the most this past year?
I wear whatever one goes with my mood, I wear my rollie one out a lot.
